Antigone: The Burial at Thebes
Renegade Theatre Company is excited to announce auditions for Antigone: The Burial at Thebes, an Athenian tragedy written by Sophocles in 440 BC. Antigone is the most performed of all Greek tragedies. We have selected a translation of this work by Irish poet and playwright, Seamus Haney.
A Glimpse Into Our Interpretation
Antigone is a forceful, rebellious work that echoes through our collective culture. At once provocative, overdramatic, dense, and dynamic, Antigone is always fascinating. What does Antigone’s sacrifice/conviction/stubbornness and Creon’s forbearance/pride/inflexibility have to teach us about the shape and nature of tragedy?
In our Antigone, Thebes is a modern workplace–our everyday setting for revolt–and a place where we feel the daily presence of the State. The vision for this show involves collaborative movement created by cast members and our choreographer through an iterative process.
This production will explore fundamental conflicts between individual conscience and state power, divine law and human law, and women’s position at home and in society. Seamus Haney’s translation enriches these themes with modern poetry, making it a gorgeous challenge for modern actors to deliver this story to a 2025 audience.
CAUSE WE’RE SUPPORTING
As with all of our productions, a portion of proceeds will be donated to a cause we believe in. For this production, we’re raising funds in support of Common Cause Georgia.
